The options before the government now are:
- The Prime Minister can resign
- Or the government stands firm on the deal, which means it will fall and there will be fresh elections
- Or both sides will buy time to evolve middle ground.
Without the Left, it comes down to 245. If Left withdraws support, the UPA is 27 seats short of majority.
I don't think political parties think about India's benefit while they take a stand. According to me the bottomline is to oppose the ruling party.
